•
Low Vision Independence
 •
Less Sight Does NOT Equal Less Life
 •
Under Construction
 •
We are thrilled about getting settled into a much more accessibility-friendly web platform. Please bear with us during this brief migration. You can stay up to date with us on Facebook and Twitter in the meantime. Be ready for the big launch here with free stuff give-aways!
 •
Your tablet speaks easy! Get started with Android Talkback.
 •
Reclaim Vision Independence with Android Apps & a little help from My Indey
 •
Look Out Google Now! There’s a new Launcher in town, and it’s Smart!
 •
6 Tablet Must-haves
 •
Tablet prices vary greatly, ranging from below $100 to over $2500. Many now have basic features like touchscreen, speakers, microphone, and headphone jack; however, based on the needs of people with low-vision, there are some very helpful must-haves.
 •
9-inch minimum screen size
 •
This is the diagonal distance corner-to-corner. I found seven and eight inch screens don’t provide quite the on-screen experience needed by low-vision users.
 •
16 GB hard drive minimum with a speedy processor
 •
Using accessibility settings and many apps can take up memory space. 16 GB provides enough with a long shelf-life. In other words, as accessibility settings and apps become more robust over time, the tablet performance should not suffer.
 •
SD (memory) card slot
 •
The ability to save specific sight-adaptive apps to an SD card means that if you change devices, the memory card can transport those into your new tablet. This saves time and effort in relocating, downloading, and setting up the same apps on a new device.
 •
Front and Rear cameras with built-in Flash
 •
Many apps that magnify and identify objects require the use of a back camera. There are portable flashes that can be connected to a tablet USB port, but if the flash port is not positioned near the camera, well it’s just one more thing to carry around and fiddle with that might not be useful. The flash can also serve as a light in dim environments.
 •
Front-facing cameras are great as mirrors! There’s also video chatting with friends and family, in addition to taking selfies for posting on Facebook.
 •
High screen resolution
 •
With the degree of magnification involved, pixels become screen smudges very quickly. A high screen resolution helps preserve the image no matter how much it’s enlarged to see the details.
 •
Wi-Fi ability
 •
The ability to connect to the Internet means access to helpful apps from the Google Play Store, auto-updates to apps on the tablet, communications, and social media to keep in touch with friends and family.
 •
In sum, those are my reasons for being so picky about these six must-haves on a tablet. If the tablet is not useful to a person with low vision, then it has no place on my website. I spent dozens of hours scouring reviews on Consumer Reports, CNet, Engadget, Wired, and Amazon.
 •
To my astonishment, these minimum specs are rare to find together on many tablets, no matter the price level. Even Apple iPad lacks a memory card slot and a rear camera flash. Hopefully, manufacturers of large tablets will take note. For now, the following three tablets meet our needs:
 •
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 tablet met all the minimum specifications, and then some! It runs on an Android operating system with access to many of the free apps we will be downloading for our purposes here. The retail price is $600, but I found it lower on many sites.
 •
In May, Microsoft is scheduled to launch the Surface 3 tablet that runs a Windows operating system. The app store is limited, but growing. The anticipated price is $500-$1000.
 •
And speaking of Windows OS tablets, another one to consider for those who enjoy the outdoors and want a truly rugged tablet, Panasonic recently introduced the Toughpad FZ-G1 that meets military standards. According to the description, it could endure just about anything, but it comes at a price over $2000.
 •
My Indey customizes tablets to meet personal vision needs with accessibility setting and apps. We also include technical support and tablet accessories for you.
